The NDLA EDI Discussion series addresses topics of interest to all libraries from an EDI lens. We provide a space for sharing ideas, asking questions, and learning from each other. Discussions take place quarterly and each have a recommended resource or two to explore beforehand.

See our Previous EDI Discussions for notes and resources gathered during previous sessions.

Got 99 Problems and Ethics is One: Bias and Inclusion in the World of AI

April 15, 2:30 PM CST | Zoom

“People’s lives are at stake, but not because of some super intelligent system, but because of an overreliance on technical systems. I want people to understand that the harms are real, and that they’re present.” - Joy Buolamwini in Lorena O’Neil’s These Women Tried to Warn Us About AI (2023) in Rolling Stone

Since the public demo of ChatGPT in 2022, AI has been a robust topic of conversation in libraries. We’re aware that training data for popular LLMs amplify racial bias, sexism, and other social harms. How can libraries work to mitigate the harms of AI systems? What does ethical use of AI in libraries look like? Join the NDLA EDI committee in thinking through these questions in the spring session of our discussion series.

Our recommended resources for this discussion are:

“These Women Tried to Warn Us About AI” (2023) by Lorena O’Neil in Rolling Stone

“Coded Bias” (2021), documentary directed by Shalini Kantayya for PBS (currently available on Netflix)
